Auto legislation signed into law effective 11/1/11 reverses many of the auto law changes that went into
effect in November of 2009.  The major changes within 2011 WI Act 14 are:

Auto Liability:
• Required minimum limits are changing from 50/100/15 to 25/50/10.  Auto liability coverage is still
required by law.

Auto Medical Payments:
• Required minimum limits are changing from $10,000 to $1,000.  Customers still have the option to reject
this coverage.  (signed rejection still required)

Uninsured Motorists Coverage (UM):
• Required minimum limits are changing from 100/300 to 25/50.  UM coverage is still required by law.

• The definition of an uninsured motor vehicle is being amended to clarify that a governmental unit cannot
be considered an uninsured motor vehicle, and to tighten requirements in situations where a “phantom
vehicle” causes bodily injury.

•  Insurers will no longer be required to offer UM coverage on umbrella/excess policies.

Underinsured Motorists Coverage (UIM):
•  UIM coverage is no longer required by law.  Auto insurers are required to explain and offer this
coverage in writing.  (a signed rejection of UIM coverage is not required)

•  If UIM is purchased, the minimum required limits will be changed from 100/300 to 50/100.

•  Insurers will no longer be required to offer UIM coverage on umbrella/excess policies.

•  The definition of an underinsured motor vehicle is being revised to be one with liability limits that are
lower than the limits of the insured’s underinsured motorists coverage.
